In a night when she needed to be on the top of her game, Ann Romney exceeded expectations.
As a close follower of the Romney campaign (and a convicted conservative), I’ve had more than my fair share of cringes since Mitt beat out Santorum, Gingrich, and Paul to become the nominee. First there was the “$10,000 bet.” Then “firing people.” Then “Mitt the Twit.”
Yeah, I’ll admit that in an election season that’s basically ours to lose, Mr. Romney had an awful habit of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
But fortunately, his wife, Ann Romney, has no such gift of gaffe. In fact, she’s got quite the opposite – a real talent for public speaking. Mrs. Romney gave what was arguably the highest profile speech of her life last night, and she did a dazzling job. She delivered her artfully written lines eloquently, and inflected her words at perfect times. Take these lines, for example:
I read somewhere that Mitt and I have a “storybook marriage.” Well, in the storybooks I read, there were never long, long, rainy winter afternoons in a house with five boys screaming at once. And those storybooks never seemed to have chapters called MS or Breast Cancer.
A storybook marriage? No, not at all. What Mitt Romney and I have is a real marriage.
One day, I hope to craft prose that flows as easily as that excerpt does. There’s humor, there’s heart, and – perhaps most importantly, there’s humanity in it. The goal all along was to help humanize Mitt and help him connect to swing voters. Ann’s speech did exactly that.
