It’s Over! Santorum Quits Nomination Fight!

So Long!

It’s a great day for Team Romney – conservative rival Rick Santorum has thrown in the towel, ending months of party debate over who should be the Republican nominee to take on Barack Obama.

The news was met with celebration from conservatives and distress from liberals who knew Santorum was unelectable. This surprising outcome was not predicted to occur for quite some time, at least until after the all-important Pennsylvania primary. A Santorum loss in his home state would have made the defeat certain, but this early surrender was somewhat unforseen.

“We made a decision over the weekend that while the presidential race for us is over, and I will suspend my campaign effective today, we are not done fighting,” said Santorum today in an announcement.

Santorum’s resignation opens the way for Mitt Romney to begin his attacks on Obama. Romney continues to lead Obama amongst independents and is gaining support daily from both the left and right as the president struggles to explain rising gas prices and a still-struggling economy with falling hiring rates.

Romney praised Santorum as a formidable opponent, as did Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich. While Gingrich and Paul both pledged to stay in the race, it’s now clear the fight is finished. Romney’s victory will only open up the path for more direct attacks against Obama and strengthen the Republican cause going into November.
